The Question I Actually Care About
People sometimes assume the thing I care most about is whether someone’s portfolio grows. It matters, and I would be dishonest if I said otherwise, but it has never been the question I am asking myself when I am building something for the people who trust me with their time and their money. The question underneath is simple, and considerably harder to answer honestly. Has this person’s actual life changed, not just the number attached to it?
Money Was Never The Destination
I have watched people build genuinely impressive numbers on a spreadsheet while still living a life that looked, from the outside, exactly like the one they were trying to escape. Same hours. Same low-grade dread on a Sunday evening. Same sense that the good part is always going to start later, once there was a little more saved. Wealth without a rebuilt life is just a heavier version of the same cage, and I refuse to sell anyone that outcome and call it success. Even the economists who study this for a living now largely agree that money keeps buying a little more happiness the further up the income ladder you climb, but mainly for people already living a life that feels like their own; for everyone else the effect quietly flattens out. That tracks with almost everything I have seen up close.
The Life You Are Handed Versus The One You Choose
Most people are living a life someone else designed for them by default, not through malice, simply because nobody ever sat them down and asked what they would actually choose if choosing were genuinely allowed. Work that fills the hours without filling anything else. A version of rest that is really just recovery from the week before. A calendar that fills itself. What I am hungry for, on behalf of every person who reads or joins anything I make, is the moment they notice the difference between the life that was handed to them and one they would actually curate on purpose, choice by choice, if nobody else’s expectations were in the room. What I Actually Want For The People I Teach
So yes, I want you to understand markets, because financial literacy is one of the few genuine forms of power still available to someone starting from very little, and I will keep teaching it as plainly as I know how. But I did not build any of this so you could become richer at doing the same unexamined life. I built it so that once the money question stops taking up the whole room, you have the energy left over to ask the far more interesting one underneath it: what you would actually do with a life that was entirely yours to design.
Free Is The Real Product
Freedom is a word that gets used carelessly in this industry, usually to sell something. I use it because it is genuinely the outcome I am working towards, for you and for myself. Not freedom from work, since I happen to love the work. Freedom from a life that was chosen for you by default rather than by you on purpose. Every article, every guide, every plain English explanation of a market you were once told was too complicated for you, is aimed at exactly one thing. Not a bigger number. A life you would recognise as fully your own, curated rather than merely accepted, and worth every year it takes to build.
